The 16th International Flamenco Fashion Show was held in Seville over the weekend. In Spain it’s known as SIMOF (Salón Internacional de la Moda Flamenca) and this year it consisted of 30 designers presenting 1,200 flamenco dresses throughout 27 shows over 4 days.
The venue, as usual, was the impressive Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos (Palace of Exhibitions and Conferences) just up the road from the Seville airport.
To see some pictures of this years flamenco dresses, remembering that there were twelve hundred of them, we can point in two directions.
For us at FlamencoAustralia.org it was a late but relaxing evening clicking through hundreds of flamenco dresses while listening to The Flamenco Show on 3ZZZ Melbourne, just so we could select our pick for Best Flamenco Dress of 2010.
Our shortlist included four dresses from the Pilar Vera collection, one of the very noisy creations of Cristo Báñez, a Melisa Lozano creation with matching hat, and a flamenco dress by Angeles Espinar which was ‘slightly’ overshadowed by an exquisitely massive flamenco shawl.
But after two hours of clashing colours, polka dots and endless ruffles our decision could well be an expression of our, then need for something safe and easy on the eyes.
So here it is… A Mª Carmen Cruz creation in classic red and not a single polka dot in sight, gets our pick for best flamenco dress at the 2010 Flamenco Fashion Show in Seville.
