The idea for the magazine started as a simple idea to put together an ‘up to date’ online directory of Australian flamenco dance teachers, performers, groups and venues. Founded by Paul French, based in Melbourne, the idea was supported by two of Paul’s marketing colleagues, one that was proficient in design, photography and Photoshop and the other a programmer and whizz at php, html and all things code. All three work in marketing small businesses online and are huge enthusiast of live flamenco.

The idea grew to include a flamenco events calendar and an option for members of the Australian Flamenco community to submit news, update their listings and become guest writers. There was talk of making it a printed magazine but with most of the teams talents firmly planted in online media, it was agreed to keep it digital and embrace the growing popularity of online video, radio streams and make it a more interactive experience.

The Melbourne Flamenco Studio came on board in late 2009 as a beta supporter and sponsor and allowed us to employ a small staff of researchers and freelancers. Combined with the hard work and commitment of the Flamenco Australia Online Magazine team, the website was launched on schedule just three months later.

“The popularity of the website actually snuck up on us well before we launched and subscriptions to the newsletter are growing at a rate of 2-3 per day!” Andrei (code monkey)

The first newsletter went out as planned in March 2010 and was received by over 200 people. There are also plans to create a series of regular videos and podcasts.

The website has a broad scope when it comes to publishing articles and while the majority of them are directly related to the flamenco Australia community there are plans to publish articles that are one step removed from flamenco in the directions of dance, guitar and all things Spanish.

“I believe we can, not only, bring the Australian flamenco community closer together, we can also make it a much bigger industry. We can convert readers who find us because we have an article about a Spanish Film Festival and convert them into flamenco lovers before passing them on through our sponsors and directory of teachers and venues.” Paul (managing editor)

The Flamenco in Australia Directory is taking shape with the first City Directory to launch over the coming few weeks. Flamenco in Sydney will launch first followed by Adelaide and Melbourne. Smaller communities like the flamenco scene in Byron Bay will not be forgotten.
