Tomás Dietz: Melbourne Masterclasses

Tomás Dietz will be visiting Melbourne this weekend and will be conducting a day of masterclasses in flamenco dance on Saturday the 3rd of July, 2010.

Tomás Dietz is the director of The Flamenco Centre, Canberra.

Initially training in Australia with Gunta Hamra, Rubi Buena and Diana Reyes he then undertook extensive studies in Spain under many maestros: Antonio
Canales, Belén Fernandez, El Güito, Ciro, Domingo Ortega, Juan Ramírez, La
China, La Tati, Manolete, Merche Esmeralda, Maria Magdalena, and Timo
Lozano.

Tomás has performed widely in Australia along side various local and international flamenco artists.  His choreographies have been adopted as the benchmarks for the grading awards at the Instituto de Danza Española, Perth, where he is also an external examiner.

As the flamenco advisor and lead male flamenco dancer for Opera Australia, Tomás will appear again in Francesca Zambello’s production of Carmen which returns to the Sydney Opera House in January 2011.

Tomás Dietz teaches workshops across Australia and he is currently associate flamenco teacher at Los Carmonas Academy in Sydney.  Tomás is renowned for his eye for detail, and is passionate about guiding the expression of emotion through skilled movement.

Beginners/Intermediate:  BULERÍAS DE JÉREZ

  • How it works: Structure and character
  • Entrances
  • Marking the letra (structure and special marking style of the arms)
  • Remates
  • Llamadas
  • Using half compáses
  • Constructing an exit
  • Pelliscos (characteristic nuances)
  • Body language: differing styles for women and for men
  • Palmas as rhythmic embellishment particular to this style
  • Jaleos as rhythmic embellishment – what to say and when
  • Any necessary distinguishing details in technique and body work will be examined thoroughly.

Intermediate/Advanced: BAILE JONDO

A close look at professional performance technique in jondo dancing:

  • The art of presence – intention and delivery: being flamenco vs doing flamenco
  • The psychology and aesthetics of movement
  • Empowering the audience
  • Energy fields – finding the power to create dimensions in space
  • Cold fish, Steaming Ham – the management and mismanagement of expression
  • Identifying and removing personal and technical barriers to effective communication
  • Any necessary distinguishing details in technique and body work will be examined thoroughly.

The palo of martinete/seguiriyas will be used as the main vehicle for this
work.
