The ‘Valentino Flamenco Ensemble‘ are La Rosa Ardiente (dancer and choreographer), Valentino (composer and flamenco guitar), Chantelle and Marko (flamenco dance), Tristen and John on percussion, Stanche on voice, Holly on bass guitar.

The groups members all come from an eclectic mixture of dance and musical backgrounds (jazz, blues, classical and flamenco) and when merged together under the banner of a flamenco ensemble, the sound and style form a unique blend of live flamenco.

The Valentino Flamenco Ensemble has been together for about a year, pulling from a collection of Melbourne’s extensive flamenco talent. On Saturday the 10th of July, the group will perform at the Darebin Arts Centre, a great venue for flamenco. It is a decent sized venue with tiered seating, great sight lines and good support and audio team.

I spoke to Inge Muhlhauser (La Rosa Ardiente) asking what we can expect on the night. The answer is ‘straight flamenco‘ performed by talented individuals who will bring a little of their non-flamenco backgrounds and influences into the performance. But this is not flamenco fusion nor will it veer off on any dramatic tangents. So expect to see flamenco with a few simple surprises for the initiated along the way.

“We all come from a mixture of dance and music backgrounds, like jazz, blues, classical and we come together to create a unique sound of Flamenco which makes us a group unlike any other!”

Inge MuhlhauserI pressed Inge a little further to find out what flamenco means to her and what it means to be a flamenco in Australia

“Flamenco is a lifestyle, not a hobby.  People who devote themselves to Flamenco understand it involves study, sweat, tears, commitment and determination and that’s only scraping the surface!  For me it’s about expression of the deepest feelings without dialog, a perfect communication between musician, dancer and singer. “

“Everybody has their own life experiences to bring to Flamenco and I think it’s important for people to understand you don’t need to be gypsy or Spanish to learn the art of Flamenco as music, song and dance have no limits, you just need to be ready for the journey. Ole!”
