Tapas on Hindley is as the name suggests, a tapas bar on Hindley Street in the heart of Adelaide’s nightlife strip. Tapas on Hindley opened in February 2009 and is quickly gaining a solid reputation for food and an entertaining night out.
But the idea behind Tapas on Hindley is to not only provide an excellent selection of tapas, Spanish fare and mouth watering paella… Their decision to actively create and support existing communities is nothing short of genius. You can spend thousands and thousands of dollars outfitting, staffing and trying to create a successful bar and restaurant, but atmosphere and community takes a bit of generosity and lateral thinking to create. It has to be invited in and then nurtured.
Let’s talk flamenco first because Australian tapas bars and restaurants often make the mistake of trying to compete and own flamenco, in an attempt to be “the one”. Great flamenco communities, like the one in San Francisco during the 1950s to 1970s formed around an open and inviting venue, a place where all flamencos felt they could contribute, jam, dance and perform. The line between stage and audience is blurred and open rather than closed and defined.
I believe that ‘Tapas on Hindley’ is one of the few flamenco venues in Australia that understands that through their generosity and openness they can help to create something bigger than themselves and in the process help put Adelaide on the map as the best flamenco community in Australia.
Tapas on Hindley is already working closely with the non-profit organisation ‘Studio Flamenco’ hosting a regular ‘Flamenco Fridays At Tapas On Hindley’. It’s a live ‘interactive flamenco’ show every Friday night at 7pm (no cover charge) with tapas, paella and two-for-one cocktails from 5-9pm. The show includes dancers from Studio Flamenco, Florian Remus (guitar), Mari Olivares (voice) and often includes guest dancers from interstate and overseas.
Tapas on Hindley is located at 147 Hindley Street, Adelaide and they also host Salsa classes, a world music jam night on Sundays and DJ’s from 9pm.
