The self-described style of this nine-piece band from Barcelona is Hip Hop Flamenco, but ultimately they are building a whole new sound strongly influenced by the flamenco music of their homeland.
Ojos de Brujo formed in 1998 releasing their first album Vengue in 1999 and then leaving Edel Records to form their own label and self produced album Barí followed by Barí: Remezclas de la Casa, Techarí, Techarí Live, Techarí Remixes, and Aocaná in 2009.
The band itself is a mixture of vocals, flamenco guitar, cajón, tabla, congas, percussion, scratching, bass, trumpet and keyboard. While not political their music does address social situations surrounding the youth of Spain.
Ojos de brujo are touring Australia in 2010 as one of the headline acts for Womadelaide and will also be performing concerts in Sydney and Melbourne (details below).
The band consists of Marina “la Canillas” Abad, Dani Carbonell, Ramón Giménez, Xavi Turull, DJ Panko, Sergio Ramos, Maxwell Wright, Paco Lomeña, Javi Martin and Carlitos Sarduy.
Ojos de Brujo perform at WomadelaideSo if your wondering… “Where Is Flamenco Going?”
Ojos de Brujo could have the answer, except that they park it broadly somewhere in a fusion of Catalan rumba meets hip hop; solea meets funk; bulerias meets jazz; gypsy meets punk; Spanish guitars meet urban rap; flamenco cante meets reggae; Spanglish meets Indian tabla; and Barcelona street theatre meets afro-cuban rhythm. Throw in some modern flamenco dancers, video art, mix them all up into a rave party and you’ve nailed it!
