For Australian born, self-taught,  flamenco guitarist Rowland Schultz, first discovered in 2007 by Tommy Emmanuel, this debut solo album will feature all original compositions.

Emmanuel describes Schultz’s music as
“awesome… incredible”.

Paco De Lucia’s most favoured Gipsy flamenco singer, Duquende, who described Schultz as a “phenomenon”. Ginesa Ortega, Arcangel, Misirli Ahmet, Yazid Bahri and Harri Stojka also praise his all original Gipsy Moro (Moorish) flamenco guitar compositions.

Schultz performs under the name Vikingo de Jerez, a flamenco artist signature name, given to him by Gitanos and Spanish/Agentinean members of the Gotan Project while in Melbourne on tour – believing he looks like a Viking but plays like he is from Jerez.

“My inspiration to compose comes from the Gipsy flamenco artists of Andalucia Spain and, of course, Paco De Lucia. It was my dream as a young boy to compose flamenco guitar music that would be recognized as being authentic and palatable. It’s such a great feeling to have so many of the world’s leading flamenco and world music artisans recognize my music for just that,” says Rowland.
“I’m also an oud player and incorporate the sound and technique of my oud playing within my guitar technique to give it that Moro (Moorish) sound.”

Rowland was born in Avalon on Sydney’s Northern Beaches and has been devoted to flamenco full-time for the last 15 years. He headlined and opened the 2009 Adelaide Guitar Fringe Festival and has been invited back again next February for the Adelaide Fringe Festival 2011. He was also recently heralded by festival organizers as “the highlight” of the newly established Buckley World Music Festival on Victoria’s Surf Coast.

In Melbourne, Schultz has collaborated and performed as support for Lulo Reinhardt at Manchester Lane, for Simon Palomares (Acropolis Now) at the Malthouse and with the 40-piece Gypsy big band The Gypsy Kings and Queens from Europe. Throughout 2010, he created regular fiesta/juergas that have featured the likes of flamenco dancers Laura Uhe, Fernando Mira, Chantelle FernandesAya Kitaoji and Antonio Vargas.

Schultz’s international recognition has secured him substantial international endorsements including a life time supply of D.Mari Strings (made in New York), making him the first concert flamenco guitarist to receive such support since the death of the world’s most famous concert flamenco guitarist, Sabicas, in 1990.

Hannabach strings in Germany supply him with the finest hand-made German Flamenco guitar strings designed for the modern flamenco guitarist. AER Germany has provided the award winning Domino 3 amp the winner of the world’s best guitar amp, which is also used by Emmanuel. Trevor Gore Guitars Australia has made him a custom hand-made Flamenco Negra and Andalusian Guitars in Spain have presented him with an array of performance and recording guitars, the only guitars currently endorsed by Paco De Lucia in Spain.

AT THE LAUNCH, Vikingo De Jerez will be accompanied by one of Australia’s leading percussionists, Michael Kontochristos on cajón (drums) and Joshua Arent on udu (African drums), alongside leading flamenco dancer, Laura Uhe. The launch will feature other special guest flamenco dancers and the end result will be a fiesta to mark the last major performance in Melbourne and to kick off the national Buleriando tour.

Buleriando was co-produced with Robin Mai, the producer of John Butlers Aria award-winning album Sunrise over Sea, and Danny Ross a featured artist on Triple J’s “Roots Charts”.

Schultz says there was no compromise when it came to recording quality with his cutting edge analogue/digital equipment including the world’s best analogue to digital conversion and hand-made vintage microphones at his very own Duende Studios.

“I wanted to recreate the old analogue sound of my favourite records of Paco De Lucia that I grew up with as a young boy. Making an album in a CD format that sounds like a record has became an extremely difficult task to achieve in today’s digital world. It’s also my policy to not edit my takes so songs up to nine minutes long were recorded in one hit and ended up being a two year project as the compositions and recording techniques evolved within the process.”

Attend a launch to secure an copy of the album or download from iTunes from December 19th. FlamencoAustralia.org will also be giving away a copy of the album to a few lucky subscribers… Subscribe Now for details.
