Broken Embraces by Pedro Almodovar

homar-cruz-broken-embracesDecember 17th 2009 is the Australian release date for the latest film from writer/director Pedro Almodovar. ‘Broken Embraces’,  starring Penélope Cruz, is a 4-way tale of love, lies and jealousy.

The Plot

Mateo (Llus Homar), a writer and film director, loses his sight and the love of his life, Lena (Penélope Cruz). 14 years on and Mateo has adopted the identity of his pseudonym Harry Caine and erased his former identity. Harry is assisted in his writing career by Judit Garcia (Blanca Portillo) and her son Diego (Tamar Novas). The tragic story of what happened 14 years, unfolds as Harry comforts a convalescing Diego, with the secrets from his past. This synopsis is of course a brief attempt to simplify a initially plot which is slowly clarified using a blend of present day action and flashbacks to a forgotten past.

The Director

pedro-almodovarThis Academy Award winning Spanish film maker has always managed to recreate an authentic look of nostalgia in his films. Right from the credits it’s like we are watching a film made 1950′s and yet set in the present day.

Three years ago he released Volver, also starring Penélope Cruz, a film consider by critics as one of the top 5 films of 2006.

The Film

penelope-cruz-broken-embracesThis latest production, Broken Embraces was released in Spain on the 18th of March 2009 as Abrazos Ratos.

“Among the most daring, original and accomplished filmmakers… Penélope Cruz with Almodóvar makes Broken Embraces soar. She’s never been more luminous, serious or sexy.” Richard Corliss, TIME

Shot in the style American film noir, the film is Almodovar’s most expensive production to date and a chance for him to revisits a much favoured device, the film within a film.

Broken Embraces Review

For Almodovar fans this is, of course, a must see film and for flamenco’s who have not yet discovered Spanish Film… Almodovar – with the help of the hauntingly gorgeous, Penélope Cruz – will make those subtitles disappear and quench your thirst for more.

Rollingstone Magazine called it, “Hot-Blooded, Haunting and Totally Embraceable.”
