Flamenco Women

Hey! Hey! It’s Palomitas Lunes.

Hola! from Pablo Flamenco

Popcorn Monday is time to relax and enjoy some great flamenco. We do the digging and each week we uncover some rare moments of flamenco that have been captured on film.

Tonight we have a segment from the wonderful flamenco documentary, “Flamenco Women.” Filmed in 1997 and shot over the six days leading up to and including a fashion show merged with flamenco, the camera follows a group of flamenco women as they prepare for the show, choreograph and rehearse under pressure at Amor de Dios. The flamenco women (dancers) are; Sara Baras, Eva La Yerbabuena, Rosa Manzano, Rosa Maria Maya, Silvia Marin, Gadea San Román, Almudena Recuenco “La Gatita,” and Lola Zalamea.

They are joined by flamenco singers; Elena Camuñez Andújar, Montse Cortés, and Guadiana. The guitarists are José Jiménez “El Viejín” and Ramón Jiménez Ramírez. Playing cajon are Lucky Losada and Timo Lozano.

The documentary was produced in collaboration with ‘Centro de Arte Flamenco y Danza Espanol – Amor de Dios. The director Mike Figgis (‘Internal Affairs’ and ‘Leaving Las Vagas’) lets the raw footage, mostly from rehearsals, tell the story and the final show is dressed up with fashion and a celebrity audience.

But aside from the cameras restlessness and a final edit that cuts from scene to scene, leaving you wanting to a see a more complete view of each dance; it is always a pleasure to dissect the choreography of Sara Baras and Eva La Yerbabuena.

For flamenco dancers and students of flamenco dance, this is a must see film giving you an insight into the strength and power of flamenco women, combined with their natural talent to create under pressure.

We only have three scenes from rehearsals and three scenes from the final performance available online… to see the entire film you will have to buy a copy of Flamenco Women on VHS. It is hard to track down, but try Flamenco Women on Amazon or you could ask your local library to arrange an inter-library loan because there is an off-air recording floating around the libraries, from the 2001 broadcast of this film on ABC-TV.

As a ‘greate’ contributor of content Florian, I will see what I can do for YOU! ;)

I will also be meeting with some one at the ABC scheduling dept. next week in an attempt to get a heads up and good warning whenever they decide to spring flamenco on their unsuspecting viewers.
