Hey! Hey! It’s Palomitas Lunes.
Popcorn Monday is a 300 word intro from me ‘Pablo’ and 30 minutes
of the very best flamenco videos from around the globe screened
by your projectionist ‘José’.
Together, we will be presenting a Flamenco Video Night here on
FlamencoAustralia.org every Monday at 8pm AEST.
Flamenco Video Night officially begins next week the 15th of March, our first official day and one that will mark our future birthdays. Tonight is a ‘beta edition’ so our design/coding team can work their magic all week and make the ‘Palomitas Lunes’ pages worthy of the awesome flamenco videos and films that we have scheduled for you. Next week we have an amazing documentary for you, from the heart of gypsy flamenco in Spain. Streamed in full right here on flamenco Australia dot org.
This week the team have simply stripped away the sidebar so you have some room to kick off those Cuban heels and stretch out… Oh, and there’s popcorn!
The flamenco videos this week are two, 14 minute excerpts from a recent flamenco theatre production held at the 500 seat ‘Cowell Theatre’ in the Fort Mason Center. That’s USA folks, it overlooks the San Francisco Bay including views of Alcatraz and The Golden Gate Bridge.
The company is Caminos Flamencos under the artistic direction of Yaelisa with music direction by Jason McGuire.
Yaelisa was born into flamenco, her bailaora mother Isa Mura was part of a ‘very’ happening flamenco scene in San Francisco during the 50s and 60s, Yaelisa remembers dancing the Sevillanas on stage of Casa Madrid (age 4) with her brother Paul, little did she know that she would go on to win an Emmy for Choreography and create the second biggest flamenco festival in North America, The New World Flamenco Festival in California (August).
Jason ‘El Rubio’ McGuire is a flamenco guitar icon, both in North America and on the Internet. Playing since he was nine, his music can be found on compilation CD’s like ‘Caravan‘ along with Tomatito; ‘Gypsy Flamenco,’ a recording with Carlos Heredia; and his own CD, ‘Distancias.’ Jason also offers an excellent online flamenco guitar course and as you can witness in his free flamenco guitar lessons on Youtube, his down to earth teaching style will appeal to most Australians.
The show is ‘Canciones 2′ recorded on the final night of three performances held on the 18th, 19th and 20th of December 2009. The entire show incorporated contemporary and original songs and fused them with flamenco-inspired choreographies. The music ranged from Stevie Wonder to the Beatles and included traditional flamenco styles supported with a full cast of 14 dancers, gyspy singers from Spain and on guitar Jason McGuire plus 10-year-old guitar prodigy Roberto Granados.
These – superbly recorded – videos are two of the more traditional flamenco pieces from a much bigger show. I picked Caminos Flamencos for this weeks show because I believe they mirror the kind of performances that we produce and have access to in Australia, but hey! I’m just the popcorn seller, but I hope you enjoy them. Leave us a comment below if you do.
OK… I’m getting the wind-up, so without further ado…
Roll the film José!
