Laura Uhe has worked professionally as a flamenco dancer, choreographer and teacher for over 20 years throughout Australia .
She was trained in classical ballet (RAD) from the age of 4. At 14 she was a member of the Perth City Ballet Youth Company, touring Scotland and Europe as part of the Aberdeen International Festival of the Arts.
She began studying flamenco dance in 1985, initially training in Australia with Gunta Hamra, Deanna Blacher, Chari Saldana, Diana Reyes and Antonio Vargas. She then studied in Spain under many luminary Flamenco artists including La Tati, Carmela Creco, Manuela Carracso, Ciro, Paco Romero, Sara Baras, Chua Alba, Ana Romero, Pepa Molina and Manuela Carrasco.
Laura has appeared in numerous theatre productions and major festivals including the Melbourne Festival of the Arts, Brunswick Music Festival, Port Fairy Festival, Apollo Bay Festival, Adelaide Fringe Festival and Sydney Carnivale.
She has been a guest choreographer and teacher for Chunky Moves in their production of ‘Wanted – Ballet for A Contemporary Democracy. She has also made musical recordings with local Jazz ensembles, the Doug Anthony All Stars and with ABC Music Deli and SBS TV.
In 2009 and 2010 she performed with the Australian Opera in Carmen in Melbourne and in Asia.
Most recently she co-produced and performed in Suena Flamenc,a a collaboration with flamenco artists from Sydney, Melbourne and Spain.
Along with her own classes at The Space in Prahran, she has taught with Danceworld , VCASS , the VCA and the Institute of Classical Ballet.
Known for her detailed, inclusive and generous teaching , many of the current generation of flamenco dancers and teachers in Melbourne have studied under her.
