Are you a Friki de Flamenco?

We are well into 2020 already, Term 1 is kicking off and flamenco classes are underway around the country. But are you one of those people who never takes a break from flamenco? You just might qualify for the title of Friki de Flamenco.

The word friki (also spelt friqui ) is Spanglish for freak. You could say the label translates to something like flamenco freak, flamenco nut or flamenco tragic. While the adoption of friki into the Spanish language might have its origins in insults, to be a Friki de Flamenco today is a badge of honour.

Being a Friki de Flamenco means being a tiny bit obsessive about flamenco. It means listening to flamenco at every opportunity, walking and thinking in compás (….7, 8, 9, 10…) and watching videos of your favourite artists until all hours. Sound familiar?

If you were in workshops and flamenco training this summer, you’re a friki.

If you tap out flamenco rhythms when you’re on a break at work or waiting in a queue, you’re a friki.

And if you practice palmas on the bus and don’t even notice that the person next to you is looking at you weirdly for clapping, you’re definitely a friki.
